This new classification is based partly on Human Microbiome Project, launched by the National Institutes of Health in 2008 and completed in 2017. It provides a new perspective on the etiology of periodontal disease. One of the exciting aspects of the new classification is the clarity around the definition of healthy periodontium. Clear guidance on the four types of implant related periodontal diseases have been defined and similar to description of neoplasms, periodontal disease can now be defined using terms like stage and grade in this new classification. Key correlations will be addressed between the oral cavity and systemic diseases to enable dental clinicians to individualize and optimize the oral care for all patients. With this enlightened new understanding of the periodontal pathogenesis and etiological factors, dental clinicians can partner with their patients to help prevent a state of dysbiosis leading to disease and support achieving and maintaing a state of symbiosis leading to health.
